Training

Dr. Marcucci is an internationally trained internist (University of Perugia, Italy). She completed an MSc in Health Research Methodology and a clinical fellowship in Hematology/Internal Medicine at McMaster University in 2012-2013. Before joining McMaster as faculty member, she was attending physician and researcher at the University of Milan, Department of Internal and Geriatric Medicine.

Distinctions

In 2018 Dr. Marcucci received an Internal Career Research Award from the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, and she now holds a 3-year Mid-Career Clinical Research Award from the PSI Foundation.

Current Research Projects

  • PeriOperative ISchemic Evaluation (POISE)-3: international randomized controlled trial (factorial) comparing tranexamic acid versus placebo, and two alternative strategies of perioperative blood pressure management, in noncardiac surgery, upon vascular outcomes and neurocognitive outcomes (cogPOISE-3 substudy)
  • Neurological Impact of CerebroVascular Events In Noncardiac Surgery Patients (NeuroVISION)-2, international prospective cohort study investigating risk factors and mechanisms of perioperative covert stroke and neurocognitive disorders in noncardiac surgery
  • FARGO study - Frailty Assessment for Risk prediction in Gynecologic Oncology patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy
  • ArthroCaP study - a mixed methods study on Chronic Post-surgical Pain, Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction and Resilience in older people undergoing elective knee surgery
  • Benefits and harms of direct oral anticoagulation and low molecular weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery: systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised trials
  • Co-investigator in other large experimental and observational studies in perioperative medicine, including VISION-2 (investigating signs of early hemodynamic compromise), HIP-ATTACK-2 (evaluating accelerated surgery for patients with hip fracture and elevated troponin), ASPIRE-AF (evaluating long term oral anticoagulation in patients with perioperative atrial fibrillation), ARTS (evaluating thromboprophylaxis with oral anticoagulation in patients undergoing different types of noncardiac surgery), and PVC-RAM trials (evaluating a post-discharge virtual care intervention, including remote automated monitoring technology, in elective and non-elective surgery),

Educational and Mentorship Activities

  • Dr. Marcucci is coordinator and lecturer for the course 721 in the Health Research Methodology (HRM) Program, a mandatory course on Fundamentals of Health Research and Evaluation Methods. She currently supervises or co-supervises 4 PhD students in the HRM program. She has so far supervised more than 15 MD and other undergraduate students in their research internship/elective/project course. She is also tutor and supervisor of residents and medical clerks in their clinical rotations in GIM Clinical Teaching Units. She is a mentor in the Women in Medicine committee.

Trainee Supervision

  • Dr. Marcucci is considering supervision of MSc and PhD students for the Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster University, and research fellows with interest in health research methods and perioperative care.
