Evidence-based medicine, as CLARITY sees it

  • "Historically, clinicians went very wrong when they were ignorant of the evidence, misinterpreted the evidence, or were unaware of its Low certainty – and patients suffered as a result. We now know that optimal clinical practice requires systematic summaries of the best evidence. Further, we know how to identify the best evidence and rate its quality using the GRADE approach. These are the first two key principles of EBM – systematic summaries and ability to identify the best evidence. There is, however, a third key principle: evidence is never sufficient for decision-making. There are always trade-offs between desirable and undesirable consequences of an intervention, and decisions require the valuation of those desirable and undesirable consequences from the patient’s point of view."
